Roseau North MP, Danny Lugay, was asked to leave Monday's sitting of Parliament by the House Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights. The Roseau North MP appeared to be in contempt with the rules of the house. At the opening session of Monday's parliament Boyd-Knights lamented that many parliamentarians do not take the time to learn the standing orders of the house. The speaker also said that it appeared that certain members of the house have what she called a "chronic disability to comprehend." Here's some of what went down between the speaker and Lugay at the start of the yesterday's afternoon session of parliament. The argument further continued upon which the speaker again asked the MP to take his seat, and upon refusal was told to "get out of the house." Chief Education Officer, Melina Fontaine, states that it is unclear whether or not Tropical Storm Erika has had an effect on this year’s Grade 6 National Assessments results; however she says more analysis will be conducted on the results.
The results announced by the Ministry of Education Monday, said a disappointing 94 scholarships and 100 bursaries were obtained out of the 1080 students who sat the exams. Meanwhile, Education Officer for Measurement and Evaluation, Robert Guiste, said despite the need for further analysis, Roseau Primary School, which opened two months later than other schools in the country as a result of TS Erika, turned out to be one of the top performing schools. Banana Growers to meet with DAPEX officials and Agriculture Minister Johnson Drigo this week6/28/2016 A group of professional farmers will meet with the Minister of Agriculture Johnson Drigo and DAPEX officials this week. This delegation is being led by Former Prime Minister and Banana Grower, Edison James. According to James, this meeting is to discuss ways in which the BAM project can better facilitate banana farmers moving forward, as well as to discuss building back relations with the UK Export Market and others as was previously done in the past. This meeting comes at a time when banana farmers here are encountering problems in finding markets to sell their produce. Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture, Johnson Drigo, says that another market has been sourced for exporting bananas and added that his ministry continues to work closely with its banana famers.
He is of the view that the local markets here are not yet saturated and believes that there are market for the Banana Farmers of the Northeast locally. Former Police Officer and businessman, Wayne James, says he was shocked after being served a letter by the Police Commissioner Daniel Carbon revoking his Firearm. The letter was served to James on Saturday June 25th 2016 and the reasons for him being disarmed are still unknown. James was speaking on Q95's Hotseat Tuesday morning. James stated further that two days after he was stripped of his firearm, his house was burglarized.
James says he felt "naked and hopeless" that this incident occurred two days after he was disarmed. He says his Attorneys will be writing to Police commissioner Daniel Carbon on the matter. ‘Dominica Boosters’ hosts its first Panel Discussion on Tuesday June 28, 2016 at the goodwill parish hall, in efforts to improve national dialogue rather than use public platforms to tear down others. Speaking on various topics, Panellists will include civil engineer Anthony Leblanc, Marie-Therese Junkere, Local Pastor Randy Rodney and Medical E.N.T Dr. Irving Pascal. Speaking at the beginning of the 7th Meeting of the 1st Session of the 9th Parliament on Monday morning, she stated that many parliamentarians do not take the time to learn the Standing Orders of the House. The speaker reminded members of parliament that despite being elected by the people, parliamentarians are still subject to the rules of the house, therefore members would be wise to pay heed to the rules. Addressing the Seventh Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament on Monday, Mrs Boyd-Knights said many parliamentarians do not take the time to learn the Standing Orders of the House. She stated further that one of the hindrances of learning is arrogance. In response, Opposition Leader Lennox Linton said the Speaker, over the years, has not learnt to be fair and objective. The Ministry of Justice, Immigration and National Security - Companies and Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), has partnered with the World Bank Group to launch an Enhanced Online Business Registry, which is an integral part of a Phase 2 Business Entry Reform Project.
The aim is to develop and upgrade the Online Business Registry system, to accelerate sustainable business entry of firms in the Commonwealth of Dominica, and improve user experience, stability and reliability, for the online business registry community. This includes a new and improved website, which streamlines procedures including social security registration, operating licenses and tax registries, and integrating these processes via electronic platforms at a national level, in other words, a one-stop-shop. An official ceremony will be held to launch the upgraded Online Business Registry on Wednesday June 29, 2016 at 10:00 am, at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, where results and achievements of Phase 2 of the Business Entry Reform Project will also be presented. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit advises Dominicans to avoid financial scams.
The warning comes during a parliamentary debate over failed insurance companies CLICO and BAICO, in which many Dominicans invested their funds, and have still not recovered their monies from those companies. The Prime Minister warned Dominicans to walk away, if an offer presents more than any bank would. Officials of the Ministry of Education are once again reporting that girls continue to outperform boys in the National Assessment. According to Education Officer for Measurement and Evaluation, Robert Guiste, the official assessment shows that in most of the subject areas, the girls are outperforming the boys. This year, 1,080 students sat the Grade six National Assessment, 534 boys and 546 girls. Meanwhile, Guiste says overall, the Western District outperformed the other districts.
