Consultant in the Social Services Ministry, Martin Anthony, has urged persons to be mindful of the behaviour being displayed by adolescents. Anthony was speaking at the opening session of a 3-day Adolescent Behaviour and Juvenile Justice reform training workshop on Monday. The Rotary Club of Dominica is gearing up to hold its annual investiture ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel, this Friday 30th June 2017.
According to a release, at the Investiture Cocktail, the handing over of the Club leadership is slated to take place. Outgoing President for the Rotary year 2016/2017, President Dr Reginald LaFleur, will hand over the mantle to incoming President, Rotarian Aylmer Irish for 2017/2018. At the ceremony, the board will assist incoming President Irish with his duties, and will also be pinned. The outgoing and incoming Presidents are scheduled to address Rotarians, their partners in service, and Rotaractors. Meanwhile, the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) will be bestowed upon two (2) deserving Rotarians. A new Rotarian will also be pinned at the Ceremony. The Feature Speaker for the ceremony will be Ambassador Hubert Charles. This theme for the new Rotary year is “Rotary: Making a difference”. As a result, persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be vigilant and to exercise caution. Meantime, moderate seas are expected during the next 24 hours with waves peaking near 8. feet. Small craft operators and sea bathers are advised to continue to exercise caution. Police Chief Daniel Carbon has disclosed that investigations into the discovery of firearms and ammunition found in a barrel at Woodbridge Bay Port last year, are now being led by United states law officials. The seizure was made by the police working in conjunction with United States law enforcement during an operation conducted on Friday 30th September 2016. Police say the barrel had also contained some grocery items. Carbon said the United States officials will act on the information which has been gathered by local investigators. The firearms seized were 5 torus pistols, 1 telti pistol, 5 torus revolvers and 1 Rossi revolver. A 9M volt stunt gun was also seized. 180 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 250 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 300 rounds of .38 ammunition and 100 rounds of .357 ammunition were also seized. Additionally, 3 magazines of sub-machine gun rounds, one 7 round, one 12 round, and one 29 round, were taken by police. Sisserou Singers to stage hit Broadway Musical “Once on this Island” for their 2017 Season of Song6/28/2017 For their 2017 Season of Song, Dominica’s acclaimed choral company The Sisserou Singers will stage ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, the hit Broadway Musical with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty based on Rosa Guy’s novel, My Love, My Love which in turn was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid.
The story is set in Haiti, and explores themes that have preoccupied Caribbean societies for centuries. According to the group, the beauty of the music, the importance and relevance of its themes and its celebration of Caribbean life and Culture make this musical a must see unique theatrical experience. The play is being co-produced by Caribbean Theatre Network (formerly People’s Action Theatre PAT). It is being directed by veteran Caribbean artist, playwright and director, Alwin Bully; with musical direction by leading Dominican musician and Choral Director, Pearle Christian; and Choreography by acclaimed professional Dancer and Choreographer Sade Bully. The cast is led by Dominica singer Michele Henderson who is joined by Webster Marie, Marie Pascale Afana, Tasha Peltier, Steve James, Simeon Joseph, Janae Jackson, Danielle Wilson, Beata Vidal, Kareem Bertrand and other members of the Sisserou Singers. This musical which opens at the Arawak House of Culture on Friday July 14th will run for three nights only. A full-length Broadway musical is an extremely rare occurrence in the Caribbean and the public is invited to be part of this history making event. US $17.5Million IDB loan expected to help Suriname improve its Agricultural Sector’s Competitiveness6/28/2017 Suriname will improve its agricultural sector’s competitiveness and raise rural incomes and exports with a US$17.5 million loan approved by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The farming industry is Suriname’s second largest export sector after mining, accounting for 7% of total export revenues. It employs 16% of the labour force and contributes 9% of the country’s gross domestic product. The IDB-funded project will help Suriname’s farmers improve phyto zoo-sanitary conditions, food safety, and agricultural research and technology transfer services. It will also boost up the scientific expertise of the agriculture, mining and fishing ministry’s personnel and provide training to producers on best agricultural practices to help them raise food safety standards. Additionally, the project will strengthen the country’s network of laboratories with new protocols and diagnosis techniques. Lennox Linton rubbishes Sam Raphael’s claim that he discouraged Government funding for Jungle Bay6/28/2017 Opposition Leader Lennox Linton denies Hotel developer Sam Raphael’s claim, of his encouragement to refuse funding to rebuild Jungle Bay from Government. Speaking on Q95’s Hot Seat on Tuesday morning Raphael claimed, while both the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader reached out to him in sympathy, it was the Opposition Leader who told him not to rebuild the resort under the current administration. Later, Linton denied making any such statement. He went on to claim these accusations are simply Raphael’s way of pleasing the administration in order to get the funds promised to rebuild Jungle Bay Resort.
