Roseau South MP, Joshua Francis, says he looks forward to seeing a budget which will tackle the employment issues in Dominica. According to Francis, while the UWP supports the funding of social programs the government has placed too much emphasis on these programs rather than economic programs which can build a sustainable economy. Today, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit is presenting the 2017/2018 budget and Francis expressed his hope to see the government allocate funds in this budget to areas which will create long term jobs in the country. Francis went on to suggest, instead of allocating excessive funds to the social programs, it would be wise to create a budget which stimulates the economy to increase the inflow of foreign capital into the country. Meanwhile, Francis is of the view that while Dominica’s economy may appear to be better off than other islands, the country is still far behind. He says one cannot judge the economy based on figures alone as there are qualitative factors to be considered comparing previous years to the current situation. According to Francis, Dominica may be ahead in certain areas of economic development however in reality, Dominica still falls behind other Caribbean nations in development. He went on to say Dominica is in need of a new economy where the country is able increase its exports and individuals are able to maintain a standard of living.

“My Love, My Home, My Dominica.”
That's the theme for Reunion Year 2018. Earlier this year, the Government of Dominica took the decision that the year 2018 shall be observed as a Reunion Year to mark the 40TH Anniversary of Independence of the Commonwealth of Dominica. A Reunion Year Committee under the chairmanship of His Excellency Hubert Charles, Ambassador and Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs was established to develop and coordinate the programme of activities for the Reunion Year. One of the first actions of the Committee was to engage the population in making suggestions for a Reunion theme. This was done mainly via radio call-in programmes. The Committee reviewed the over 300 submissions from which a selection was made. The theme ‘My Love, My Home, My Dominica” was chosen as it is inclusive and captures the essence of the Dominican patriotic spirit and attitude. It expresses sentiments of fondness, of love and of emotional attachment to Dominica among Dominicans at home and in the Diaspora, and among those from other lands who have made Dominica their home. The theme represents that common emotional thread which unites Dominicans across political, religious and spatial lines, evoking feelings of duty and commitment to defend Dominica and to protect her in the face of various challenges. It embodies the attitude that Dominicans must have and must embrace in order to unify efforts, forge ahead as a nation and build a more prosperous Dominica. The Committee is now inviting interested persons and graphic art enterprises to submit logo designs for Reunion Year 2018. Interested parties can contact the Ministry of Social Services or the National Cultural Division. |
