Dr. Camille David, a marine expert with Caribbean Aqua-terrestrial Solutions, stated that it is the responsibility of Homeowners and the power therein to have proper drainage and even possibly more rainwater harvesting from the rooftops as a form of control to reduce, uncontrolled and unregulated water flow from the rooftops. He was speaking on the Lifeline Program hosted by Dr.Thomson Fontaine on Q95 Sunday Morning. Dr. David further stated that in order to lessen the risk of flash floods, which represent a threat to the nation's development, we should rely less on hard measures and more on soft ones, such as excellent water cost management and appropriate land management practices. The 2022/2023 Chevening Scholarship awardees were formally announced on August 26, 2022. Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue master’s degrees in the UK. The Chevening Scholarship provides complete financial support to anyone wishing to study a Master's Degree at a British university. Remarkably, two Dominican females, namely, Debra Francis and Devi St Luce were chosen to pursue a Master’s Degreeprogram at distinct Universities in the United Kingdom. Debra Francis will pursue an MSc in Human Rights & Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, while Devi St Luce will pursue a Master’s Degree (LLM) in Drafting Legislation, Regulation and Policy at the School of Advanced Studies, University of London.
Debra Francis, Human Rights Advocate, founder of Get Me to UWI and co-founder of the Regional Organization of Women in Leadership (ROWL), stated that she was inspired to apply for the Chevening Scholarship as it provides a very unique opportunity to pursue postgraduate study in the UK. According to her, the Chevening Scholarship allows her to become part of a very prestigious network of brilliant leaders from across the globe. “I decided to apply because in order for me to take the next steps in advancing my career, I need to expand my knowledge and qualifications and I also need to be connected to global intellects,” she articulated. Following completion of her Master’s Degreeprogram in the UK, Francis intends to return to Dominica to develop programs and policies which promote women’s political and civil rights. It is her hope to further develop the rights of the most vulnerable groups and to ensure that all human rights are protected. Meanwhile Devi St Luce, highlighted that she was inspired by the 2021 Chevening cohort to apply for this prestigious scholarship as a great number of Caribbean scholars pursued the LLM in Drafting Legislation, Regulation and Policy, which she is passionate about. “I was encouraged and elated that in the Caribbean we have identified shortfalls in our law and are looking for ways to change them. I have identified the lacuna and areas which require change in Dominica and with hard work and determination I will make these changes,” she voiced positively. According to St Luce, she recognized that legal drafters are needed in Dominica and Chevening is seeking new thinkers and brilliant minds that have the capabilities to make that change. She stressed that legal drafting is a specialty that remains on the government of Dominica’s list of national priority training areas. In addition, St Luce encouraged persons with a genuine interest in Chevening to start researching on the programs and UK schools early as it is integral to the process. “Be confident in your abilities and your passion and highlight your achievements. Do not be afraid to sell yourself as this scholarship awards authenticity. Apply early and message current or past Cheveners for advice. Chevening is a network and everyone is willing to help,” she stated. These remarks were shared with local news platform, EmoNews Dominica. MP HR expert, Sheri Heller shared pertinent information that every organization must have, when dealing with family medical leave. Employers often forget or take for granted that their employees may have a lot of family issues dealing with outside of the work environment. Female employees are often mothers, bread winners, counselors to their children. This is sometimes tripled when the mother is a single parent. Coming into this new school year, and still adjusting to life after covid, people often feel mental pressures that often go unnoticed. During a zoom conference over the weekend, HR expert Sheri Heller spoke on the importance of employees taking regular leave from work. Parents taking leave from work, does not mean they sit home relaxing, but rather it is a much-needed break to balance work and family, as being a parent has no days off. However it is not just for parents, but workers whose income may not afford them that vacation in a 5-star hotel, but rather give them some mental ease for a few days to get back into work flow, says Heller. The entire goal of government can be summed up in a nutshell as presumably to foster an environment that will enable the majority of its citizens to succeed. This from Justice Dr. Irving Andre on the Global view on Q hosted by Sheridan Gregoire (Mr G). He highlighted that, foreign workers are receiving jobs on the island, and displacing local workers in the midst of an existential crisis. While it is not the government’s obligation to provide jobs to all its citizens, once it creates that environment, there are other individuals who can establish businesses and create such employment. Dr Andre makes the point that locals are left on their own while other nationalities receive contracts from Dominica’s government. He believes this implies categorically that you are unworthy of taking part in the development of your own island. He said this would never occur in other nations. Dominicans must therefore confront this circumstance by asking themselves a question in the mirror, “Is it accurate to say that I cannot perform some of the tasks that other nationalities seem to be performing in Dominica?” Justice Dr. Irvin Andre.

The necessity for dredging, according to marine expert Dr. Camille David of Caribbean Aqua-terrestrial Solutions, is a sign that the watershed is not operating as it should, and when more materials and sediments are dumped than transferred, the entire flow mechanisms of the river will be jeopardized. He was speaking on the Lifeline Program hosted by Dr.Thomson Fontaine on Q95 Sunday Morning. Dr. David continued by pointing out that a well-functioning river has its own controls, such as the stones in the river, whose primary duty is to regulate the river's flow and stiffness while simultaneously serving as resistance. Mr. Paul Baron, a former President of the Dominica National Youth Council, speaks about young people in business and finance. He points out that small island developing states like Dominica, where the majority of the systems are still under significant construction, struggle with access to funds. Although the aid bank has publicly said that it has the resources, Mr. Baron adds that the necessary procedure is very difficult for new and inexperienced entrepreneurs to obtain. According to Baron, it almost seems to be done deliberately to alienate those who are attempting to develop their ideas and are in need of financial support. He observes that there is a lot of pressure placed on the people, which can lead to irritation or even lead them to abandon their intentions to launch their own businesses.
