‘For many years the Roosevelt Skerrit Administration shied away from implementing proper Electoral Reform in Dominica.’ Since the 2005 elections, Electoral Reform has never been implemented, allowing for use of questionable actions by Labour Party Officials to secure the win. On August 31, 2020, Prime Minister Skerrit said cabinet had approved the engagement of Caribbean Jurist Sir Charles Michael Dennis Byron, on an EC$450,000 contract plus expenses, to serve as a sole commissioner to advance efforts towards electoral reform in Dominica. Since making that announcement, the Prime minister and his administration has been accused of misuse of public funds and efforts to mislead the population, especially after sending an additional invitation to the OAS and the Commonwealth to once again assist Byron with something they already did for Dominica in 2014 and 2019. Based on recent reports of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the OAS and Dominica Civil Society Group, recommendations were already provided, to significantly improve the Election process in Dominica in the past two Election years. CCM Executive Member John Blanchard, says this act by the Skerrit Administration is hypocritical and unjustified. CCM Executive Member, John Blanchard

Former Agriculture Minister, Atherton Martin, brings to focus, what is described as the ridiculousness of the Skerrit-led DLP Administration, in its obsession with spending all the country’s resources – allocated for various renewable energy projects, in exploring Geothermal Energy, when studies already confirmed the cost effectiveness and time efficiency of other sources of renewable energy projects – such as Photovoltaic, Solar, Wind, and Hydro. Martin contends that the administration clearly did not pay heed to the Low Carbon Climate Policy, which was passed in parliament in 2012 – though the administration has been seeking viable possibilities to construct a Geothermal plant in Dominica. The Rapid advancement of technology in creating other forms of Renewable energy, currently exceeds Geothermal energy initiatives in cost effectiveness and construction, while providing high returns on energy production. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says too many young people have been tarnished by police records over simple Cannabis Possession. He said moving forward, this new amendment to the law will stop the situation. He made these statements in Parliament on Monday in light of the newly amended law that allows persons to possess 28grams of Cannabis on their person. Smoking of Cannabis in public is still illegal in Dominica, but a small amount has been decriminalized, but many persons are still calling for the full legalization of the herb. The Honorable Prime Minister says that this will now reduce the pressure on the police and procession team especially in light of the legal procedures that need to be adhered to over these minor situations.
