Representative of the Caribbean Agriculture Research & Development Institute (CARDI), Dorian Ettienne, says a training workshop for local agro-processors here is expected to enhance the small scale production and enhance food and nutrition security through the application of appropriate production systems. He was speaking at the launch of the workshop hosted by the Dominica Export Import Agency DEXIA Monday. The workshop titled "Strengthening the capacity of agro-processors, farmers, exporters on processing and packaging technology specific to their operations, emphasis on routes and tubers" is an activity planned as part of the implementation phase of the action under the program titled, "Agriculture Policy Program (APP), with focus on the Caribbean and the Pacific." The program is funded under the 10th European Development Fund and is executed through the contribution agreement signed between the European Union and the Inter-American Institute for cooperation on agriculture IICA. The APP is also being implemented in collaboration with the Caribbean Agriculture research and development institute and the CARICOM secretariat. Meantime, Kent Coipel, representing the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), addressed the importance of proper packaging of the local products, an area the workshop hopes to address for local producers. The workshop runs for two days. Day one focused mainly on proper packaging and labelling requirements while day 2 will include hands on coaching with visits to production sites of local manufacturers.
