Caricom officials say there is not a lot they can do to resolve the issues surrounding regional airline LIAT. Deputy Program Manager of Free Movement and Labour at the Caricom Secretariat, Dr Olivia Smith, says the issue is within the management of LIAT, and not one CARICOM can rectify. Several CARICOM Countries have publicly expressed their displeasure with the services being offered to their citizens by LIAT. The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) unit in an effort to decentralize public sensitization efforts and heighten communal awareness, hosted a public sensitization on CARICOM facilitation of travel in Dominica over the weekend at the Goodwill Christian union church. The sensitization was intended to create and enhance the flow of information through discussions with stakeholders, thus better equipping the public to be aware of and fully exploit the rights and privileges of CARICOM nationals under the existing treaty. Dr Smith who shared her experience with LIAT also mentioned the solution should be to fix the current airline instead of creating competition for them.
