Chef Nikki Esprit who is employed at Cafe Desiderata has defeated five (5) other competitors, and won Dominica’s ‘Island Chef’ title for the third year in succession. The competition was held at the Anchorage Hotel in Castle Comfort on Friday Night.
The Island Chef competition was hosted by the Anchorage Hotel. It was organized by ‘Vetivert Inc’. It is reportedly the biggest event of the Annual Nature Island Food & Drink Festival, and was held on April 23rd 28th and 29th this year. Shortly after she received her title award, Niki Esprit who is a resident of Fond Cole said “I was very nervous. I didn’t expect it, but having got it for three years, this is good, and I am happy”. She added that the guys really pushed her to the limit. The competition was challenging and they brought out their best. She surmises that what gave her the edge was that she used all the ingredients from the mystery basket provided, while some of the other chefs had not done so. She is grateful to her Desiderata Team, and concedes that their support helped her to win. Nikki is entitled to a two-week, all-expense paid internship at the five-star Cuisinart Resort & Spa in Anguilla. Meanwhile, Chef Arnaud Chabert who represented Anchorage Hotel copped the People’s Choice Award. Chef Joslyn Joseph of La Flambeau Restaurant and Beach Bar captured the award for best appetizer, best main course and most promising chef. The best dessert award went to Chef Lourdes Sanchez of Spain. The other competitors were Chef Jervonne Christophe of Dive Dominica and Chef Karine Glascow of Rainbow Restaurant.
