Denison ‘King Dice’ Joseph has set an all-time record of winning the calypso crown eight (8) times2/10/2016 Denison ‘King Dice’ Joseph won the Dominica Calypso Association’s Calypso Monarch competition for the 8th time. Dice dethroned Gregory ‘Karessah’ Riviere at festival city, and was crowned at about 2:00 am on Sunday 7th February 2016. The order in which the calypsonians sang was pre-determined by dipping for a number at the Calypso House in Bath Estate on Thursday 4th February 2016. ‘Dice’ won the competition back to back from 2004 to 2006, in 2008, and then from 2012 to 2014.
Webb placed 2nd, Bobb placed 3rd and Boople placed 4th. The other finalists who participated in the competition were Observer, Sye, Janae, Shadowflow, Karessah, and Checker. The calypsonians sang in the following order, and these are the two songs that were sung by each of them, in the two rounds: Observer “Red Reign” & “Dead Calypsonians’ Request’ Sye “Good Old Days” & “Feel Up, Feel Up” Janae “Gratitude” & “My Love, My Country” Shadow Flow “Brogodow” & “Each One, Teach One” De Webb “Survival” & “De Tail Wagging De Dog” Karessah “Associate Degree” & “The King is Back” Boople “Air Dominica” & “Three Witches in London” Checker “I Aint Going Nowhere” & “Castrate Dem” Dice “Find Your Purpose” & “MyDominicaTradehouse.com” De Bobb “My Radio Show” & “Mama Dominica” Dice appears to have emerged as Dominica’s undisputed calypso monarch for 2016, and the mammoth crowd of enthusiastic spectators were generally thrilled to the core. The question is, will it be Dice Again in 2017? Your guess is as good as that of anyone else.
