A businessman, who was detained by police on Tuesday 2nd March 2016, in the course of an investigation into a report of alleged inappropriate behaviour involving a 15-year old female, has been charged.
The businessman appeared before Magistrate Candia Carette-George on Friday 4th March 2016. He is facing six charges under the Sexual Offences Act: three alleged counts of indecent assault and three alleged counts of unlawful sexual intercourse. He was not entitled to plead because these are indictable offences. Due to the nature of the offense, the Sexual Offences Act prohibits the publication of the name of the accused. The magistrate ordered that the courtroom be cleared and the media was not allowed to sit in. The prosecution which was led by Valda Powell did not object to bail, and the businessman was granted seventy-five thousand dollars’ ($75,000) bail. He was asked to surrender his travel documents, and warned to be on good behaviour. The defendant was also warned not to leave the state without the Court’s permission, not to interfere with any witnesses in the matter directly or through influencing others to do so. He is to report to the Roseau Police Station on Mondays and Fridays between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The defendant was represented by Attorney Wayne Norde. Trial date is set for June 6, 2016.
