Dominica Freedom Party political leader Bernard Hurtault asserts that we need a paradigm shift in our perception and expectations of leadership, and of the people we choose as leaders

​Given that leadership is a crucial component of all government and governance, the problem of leadership obviously stands out among the various concerns that political science addresses. Bernard Hurtault, political leader of the Dominica Freedom Party, continues to make the case that the Dominican society needs to make a paradigm shift in how we view leadership and our expectations of the leaders we hope to select. He says when considering leadership, there is something a little antiquated about our society’s approach that needs to be altered.

​Political leadership is considered to play a crucial role in how nation-states respond to both traditional governance difficulties and more recent global ones. Hurtault emphasizes that we must reconsider the process by which we determine our leaders and, more especially, the individuals we choose. We must rethink what leadership entails in general and situate people in a context that would enable them to demonstrate appropriate leadership qualities for effective governance.
