The Ministry of Education is seeking ways to eliminate Corporal Punishment as a form of discipline. Although Corporal Punishment is on the books, Chief Education Officer Melena Fontaine says the Ministry of Education must seek alternative disciplinary practices. She says there is a fine line between physical abuse and Corporal Punishment, and a decision must be taken on whether Dominica could eliminate that form of punishment altogether. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNICEF held a series of workshops last week, to build awareness about the Child Friendly Schools initiative. The workshops aim to influence attitudes of members of the public about child safety issues, including bullying, corporal punishment and child sexual abuse, as well as to place some focus on positive behaviour management, not only at school – but at home and in the wider community.
