President of the Dominica Public Service Union, Steve Joseph, calls for improved policies to appropriately aid Public Officers pre and post-disaster period. Referencing the advent of Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and Hurricane Maria in 2017, Joseph explained the added destruction of persons who are still employed, paying a mortgage but cannot go home – this specifically applies to the entire community of Petite Savanne who have been displaced by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika in 2015. Steve Joseph adds that measures for storage of healthy food needs to be considered as in most cases, persons develop added health complications after a crisis – due to the amount of infrastructural and crop damage wrought upon a country by storms –persons are left with processed tin-stored items for food, in the first few days post the disaster.
