Dr. Donald Peters, President of the Dominica State College, has pledged that the DSC will focus on ensuring that the institution focuses on majors that will contribute to, and be supportive of national industries.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony of scholarships to five students who are pursing Associate degrees in Agriculture on Tuesday February 16, 2016, Dr. Peters pointed out that Agriculture, Tourism and Hospitality are the industries of focus in Dominica. He said “This is the national college, and one of the things that a National College does, is to ensure that whatever we produce is supportive of the national industries of the country. Therefore, one would expect that the main majors of the Dominica State College would be Tourism and Agriculture, and these would be paramount, and would be a priority for our students,” he indicated. Dr Peters said although the college doesn’t dictate what the students choose to do, “as long as I am here, we will put all the resources we have in these majors, because what a college does is to create careers for employment, and if one wants to work in the industries in Dominica, one needs to do agriculture and tourism”. He said though some people may not agree, there are one billion people in the world who need to be fed, and agriculture provides the avenue for lifetime employment. “Tourism is the same thing, we are now attracting people, and that is supportive of the industries here. Therefore, those majors are consistent to you as a student to help yourself”. The DSC President also expressed delight that students are arming themselves to take part in the agricultural industry which must become paramount for our country.
