In preparation of the upcoming hurricane season, Dominica’s Kalinago are wisely taking precautions and making contingency plans in lieu of the overly active 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season. The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1stand ends on November 30theach year. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), there are potentially 23 named storms, including tropical storms, hurricanes, and major storms expected for the Atlantic Hurricane Season this year. Minister of Environment and Kalinago MP, Cozier Frederick, boasts that the Kalinago Territory has a constituency emergency plan, he says to date there are emergency shelters ready and fitted in the eventuality of a major weather event. Frederick says the focus at the moment is the ongoing works with the local government council and the NEP to assist residents in home preparations, like clearing community drains, trimming down large trees and branches that are close to residential homes & clearing debris from neighborhoods and homes - as these become dangerous when storms with high winds make landfall.
