Farmers and persons within the agro processing sector are set to benefit from a workshop being organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
According to a release, the Workshop titled “Strengthening the capacity of agro-processors, farmers, exporters on processing and packaging technology specific to their operations: emphasis on roots and tubers” is an activity planned as part of the implementation phase of the Caribbean Action under the programme entitled Agriculture Policy Programme (APP) with focus on the Caribbean and the Pacific. This programme is funded under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) and is executed through a Contribution Agreement signed between the European Union (EU) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). The main objectives of the workshop to be held on Monday at Dexia Conference room are: to identify and recommend suitable packaging material for agro-products: Composite flour; frozen tubers, to coach agro-processors on food processing methods and product development re roots and tubers, to identify basic equipment and materials to assist in the peeling, slicing, and packaging of dasheen and other tubers and to improve the skills and knowledge of Packing house operators, exporters, and technicians in conforming to the commodity standards. The workshop will also offer training and hands on coaching to a total of 15-20 industry personnel and will be facilitated by Mr Taufeek R Ali of Trinidad and Tobago.
