Forestry Division Officials trying to find out what is causing crayfish to die and drift ashore in the Layou River area. Residents complained that some dead and some other very weak wildlife had been drifting ashore since March 20th in large numbers.
Q95 understands that officials from the Forestry Division visited the area on Monday, and took samples of the water and crayfish, to try to determine the cause of the problem. One Belles resident said on Monday, that she suspects the water is contaminated. She said “They are drifting to shore because it seems that something in the water is bothering them”. Reports indicate that following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, and because of the number of landslides in the forest, the water is always kind of dirty, and no one appears to know for sure what is happening, and everyone therefore appears to be waiting for answers from the Forestry Division. Q95 will monitor the progress of these investigations, and will bring you more information as it becomes available.
