Health officials in Dominica say it is inevitable that the Zika virus will soon reach the Island2/2/2016 Health officials on Island say it is inevitable that the Zika virus will soon reach Dominica. They are basing their analysis on several factors; chief among them being the fact that Dominica is closely linked to the 24 countries currently infected with the virus. In a statement issued on Monday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health & the Environment Helen Royer said, the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which is present throughout Dominica is the vector that carries the Zika virus. Royer says the current situation is of grave concern, not only because of the debilitating effects on the infected persons but also because of the possibilities of babies being born with neurological and other malformations. Royer says drastic measures must be taken at the community and government levels to protect citizens from the vector of the Zika virus.
