Justice, Immigration & National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore is calling for a national debate on the issue of crime in Dominica. Blackmore stated “We have to have a national debate on the whole issue of crime, and as I have said before, the government has to lead the way to provide the policy direction, but at the end of the day, we have to understand that, if we see something, say something.”
He says “Based on the nature of the crimes that have occurred recently, it is clear that there is a shift in the country’s value system.” The Minister went on to list the incidents of crime that have become the topics of discussion on island. During the Carnival season, Mas Dominik 2016, a number of crimes took place. The severe beating of a policeman being the chief among them. Shortly thereafter, on February 20th 2016, weapons were seized, and illicit drugs discovered in the community of Silver Lake. On February 23rd, Police seized five guns in Newtown.
