Man fined $6000 by a Magistrate after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply

Darran Kelon Hilaire was fined $6000 by Magistrate Bernard Pacquette after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply.
Hilaire, 23, is from Petite Savanne, but is now a resident at Kent Anthony’s Guest House in Roseau.
 He was arrested by the Drug Squad on May 5, 2016 in Layou with 4,540 grams of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $10,000.
He had to pay $2,000 by today, or in default spend two months in jail. The remaining $4,000 is to be paid in six (6) months, or in default six months’ jail time.
Before the fine was imposed, Hilaire’s lawyer, Ronald Charles, begged the court not to impose a custodial sentence on his client, whom he said, was “sorry and remorseful for his actions. He pleaded guilty and fully cooperated with the police. He is hurt and embarrassed, and is now at the mercy of the court,” Charles said.
Hilaire, he said, had a three-year-old son, and wanted to be given another chance in life.
He had no previous convictions.
