National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit hosted a “Sports Not Drugs Summer Programme” in Bagatelle8/3/2016 This year, the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit chose the community of Bagatelle, in the Southern District, to embark on a ‘Sports Not Drug Summer Program’ during the summer vacation, from 18th to 22nd July 2016.
A total of twenty-eight (28) participants attended the program which included activities such as discussions on drugs, indoor and outdoor sporting activities, a field trip to the Carib Territory and Emerald Pool. Sessions included Low Self Esteem and Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Effects of Alcohol on the Body, Role of Crime Stoppers Dominica, Personal Hygiene, Tobacco Smoke and Its Effects, Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs, Agriculture as an Alternative to Drug Use, Peer Pressure and Anti-Doping. Organizer of the Programme, Mrs. Crephenia James-Turney is of the view that the programme met its objectives, to educate young people on the importance of health in prevention of drug abuse, and identifying alternatives to drug use, abuse, misuse and trafficking.
