National Epidemiologists Dr. Paul Ricketts says while microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head) in babies has been linked to the Zika virus in pregnant women, there are other complications which can develop in pregnant women. He says information indicates that infections in pregnancy from the Zika virus could be severe enough to result in spontaneous abortion or early fetal death or malformations in the baby. Dr. Ricketts says this mosquito borne virus is a very significant challenge and the best approach is to try to prevent the infection. The Ministry of Health and the Government of Dominica will mount a national cleanup campaign to destroy the breeding sites of the mosquito on Thursday February 18th 2016.
The Zika virus has been outlined as a public health threat by the Ministry of Health and Environment here.
