Information Officer at the National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit Martha Jarvis says it is not economically viable to arrest someone for being in possession of the small quantity of marijuana. The debate on the 'legalization of marijuana' has been ongoing with persons in support of fully decriminalising the herb while others are opting for the medical use.
Just last month, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said among matters up for serious discussion in 2017, is the issue of medical marijuana, and how Dominicans can take advantage of this. Jarvis says authorities need to re-examine how to deal with persons who are caught with small amounts of the drug.
