It is Nomination Day today for the June 7 by-election in the Soufriere Constituency.
The governing Dominica Labour Party’s (DLP) candidate is Denise Charles, an accountant who works with the energy company Petro Caribe. While the DLP appears confident of victory, the opposition United Workers Party is banking on Soufriere Village Council chairman Hidges Adams to win the seat. Adams was the UWP candidate in the last general election, but failed to capture the seat. In keeping with the regulations governing nominations, each candidate is required to make a deposit of 500 dollars. The coming by-election follows the recent resignation of former politician Ian Pinard from parliament – he had resigned earlier as a government minister. Pinard says he stepped down to deal with a court matter, relating to allegations of inappropriate behavior with a minor. He has appeared on the campaign trail in support of Charles, who was Pinard’s campaign manager in the last general election in December of 2014.
