During new Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland’s courtesy call to Prime Minister Skerrit on Friday, he requested that in the course of providing advocacy for small island states, she should remind the international community that time waits on no one, and access to designated funds should be expedited.
The Commonwealth has reportedly agreed to provide technical and other support to small island states, for preparing documents to access funds to combat climate change, and Prime Minister Skerrit says Dominica would like to have expeditious access to those funds. Mr Skerrit said "...you borrow money from these international financial institutions in 2016 and you won’t see actual work, not before 2020 or 2023. Now if in 2016 it was urgent and nothing has been done to mitigate against this urgency, what would it be like in 2020 or 2023”.
