Police Chief Daniel Carbon disclosed at a press conference on Friday, that eight (8) of the ten (10) murders that were reported during 2016, were solved. He also stated that six disappearances were reported, and are being treated as homicides.
He said there were six reported disappearances last year, which we have categorized as homicides, because whenever the body of the missing person was located and identified, we launched an investigation and treat it as a homicide. Marcellin Williams was reported as missing, and he has not been located or identified. Last week during the New Year holidays, on the 3rd January 2017, a 67-year-old man disappeared from Coulibistrie, we are still investigating that matter. Carbon explained. We are putting a lot of effort into investigating missing persons. Carbon said the Police officers worked very hard in 2016, and he is satisfied with their performance, but there is room for improvement. He added that although there is a reasonable conviction rate at the courts, he would like to see an improved conviction rate in serious matters, as well as in simple traffic matters. Carbon also reported that “in 2015 there were 1330 serious crimes, including murder, robbery, burglary, taking conveyance and grievous bodily harm. In 2016 we had 1,302 crimes, so there was a small decrease, but any decrease is always appreciated”.
