Recent international health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, mpox, and Ebola outbreaks, as well as the ongoing threats of other zoonotic diseases, food safety, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) challenges, ecosystem degradation, and climate change, highlight the need for resilient health systems and accelerated global action. One Health is seen as the primary strategy to addressing our society's critical and complex concerns.
The leaders of the Quadripartite groups working on One Health delivered an extraordinary request for increased global action at their first annual face-to-face meeting this week. The Quadripartite consists of four major agencies: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organization for Animal Health. (WOAH). Stressing the need for enhanced collaboration and commitment to translate the ‘One Health’ approach into policy action in all countries, the Quadripartite leaders urge all countries and key stakeholders to promote and undertake the following priority actions which is to Prioritize ‘One Health’ in the international political agenda, increase understanding and advocate for the adoption and promotion of the enhanced intersectoral health governance.
