Recent studies have allegedly indicated that the trend of teenage girls and boys being sexually abused by adults for material gain, is prevalent in two Caribbean countries, Dominica and Antigua & Barbuda.
Antiguan based psychotherapist Dr. Jean Machelle Benn Dubois conducted the study on Transactional Sexual Abuse (TSA) – from the perspective of child protection professionals, and then presented her findings during the Conference of Academic Research and Development (CARD), which was hosted by the Antigua State College (ASC) last week. Dominican Journalist Brentan Henry says according to Dr. Benn Dubois; the practice has become so commonplace, that almost all participants in the research were able to identify specific cases of incidents that have occurred. Henry says he believes that Dr. Benn Dubois’s challenge was in communicating that this practice within the culture is unacceptable, as she made the call for individualised counselling strategies for the affected parties in her presentation.
