Reports indicate a court order has blocked the award of 2016 Band of the year to Afrikulture Stilt Walkers. The prize for that award was in the process of being conferred upon the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers, at a Carnival prize-giving ceremony held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. On 12th February 2016, DDA officials had announced that the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers: Tempest Island Alive, was the Adult Band of the year.
The injunction from the chambers of Glen Ducreay, was handed to the CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Colin Piper, just before the ceremony began, stated that respondents/defendants should refrain from hosting the prize-giving ceremony, or alternatively, should refrain from presenting or delivering the award for Adult Band of the Year. It appears the DDA chose the alternative, and announced at the ceremony that the prize will not be given to the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers. Earlier this week, Piper had announced that the DDA and the DFC would conduct an internal review on the determination of the award of Band of the Year, after receiving a letter of complaint from the leaders of the Thunderbird Band and the Karnival Korner Band, on February 17, stating their “disagreement and opposition” on the award of Band of the Year to the group in question. They claimed that certain important criteria for the award were not met, and asked that the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers be disqualified.
