Salybia MP & Kalinago Affairs Minister gets $539,000 to eradicate pit latrines in that constituency12/15/2016 Parliamentary Representative for the Salybia Constituency and Minister for Kalinago Affairs, Casius Darroux is in line to receive an amount of $539,000 from the Ministry of Finance for the eradication of pit latrines in that constituency. He says this project will be undertaken under an ongoing sanitation program, and works will begin in January 2017.
He noted that 49 families from Sineku will benefit from the program. He stated “we want to start the program in Atkinson & Sineku, to eradicate pit latrines there as well. We will then move to other communities and ensure that every community is dealt with, so that by the end of this coming year, we will have eradicated all pit latrines in the territory.” Darroux said he hopes that the Kalinago Territory, Atkinson and Antrizle will be the first communities to have eradicated pit latrines on the island. He revealed that works have started on houses made for single families in his constituency, from material donated by the government of Korea. He further stated “We have started the foundation for three families, one in Concord, one in Bataca and the other in Gullet River”, at an estimated cost of about $42,000 per structure, plus the cost of labour. He said, we are hoping to complete seven houses by February 2017, and then we will move on to assist the 35 individuals who were identified to be beneficiaries.”
