Senator Dr. Fontaine provides some clarity about the recent Honorary Doctorate given to PM Skerrit2/25/2016 Senator Dr. Thompson Fontaine has provided some clarity, about the uncertainty surrounding a recent Honorary Doctorate, which was given to PM Roosevelt Skerrit, by an education institution in Punjab, Indian.
The Doctor of Literature Honoris Causa was conferred on PM Skerrit by Chancellor of the Lovely Professional University in Punjab, India on Tuesday, purportedly for his "enormous global impact", being among the youngest yet longest serving leaders in the democratic world today. Dr. Fontaine, addressing the matter on Q95's 'Talk on the Block' Wednesday afternoon, said the degree is often conferred, as a way of honoring a distinguished visitor's contributions to a specific field, or to society in general and often given to graduation speakers at universities. However, he says with regard to the use of this honorific, the policies of institutions of higher education generally ask that recipients refrain from adopting the misleading title of Doctor.
