Some Dominicans in Central Florida form an entity entitled Dominica Orlando Movement (DOM)….12/22/2015 Some Dominicans resident in Central Florida have recently formed an entity entitled Dominica Orlando Movement (DOM). Organizers say the objective is to develop and promote “meaningful connections and relationships among Dominicans in the Central Florida region, and the Dominica resident at home”
The Dominica Orlando Movement Organization (D.O.M) is said to have been formed shortly after Tropical Storm Ericka devastated parts of the island on August 27, 2015. Following the storm, Dominicans residing in the Central Florida region reportedly came together to participate in relief efforts for Dominica, by collecting, shipping and donating food, clothes and other items. The founders of DOM report that the generous support given to the Erika relief project in terms of time, effort and finance, prompted the formation of the organization in September 2015, said PRO Malcia Paul. She says to date, DOM has contributed to relief efforts post Erika, by donating over $5000 in food, clothing and other necessary items to the residents of Dominica. The group also held its first annual Independence event/fundraiser in Central Florida, which Paul describes as a success. She says DOM intends to continue planning and implementing several fundraising events, to contribute to the needs of Dominican residents. DOM can be contacted at [email protected] and at Dominica Orlando Movement Non-profit Org on Facebook.
