He was elected to the House of Assembly as MP for the Mahaut Constituency in a Patrick John Dominica Labour Party sweeping victory. He was widely known as, and called ‘Captain’, due to his military service in the UK before returning to Dominica. Riviere served as Minister of Finance. He championed the establishment of the National Bank of Dominica in 1978. Followed the May 29, 1979 political revolution, he stood solidly with Patrick John, and did not resign as a minister of government. Along with Patrick John, Riviere remained steadfastly as a member of the opposition, until what was called the interim parliament, during the interim government led by Oliver Seraphin, was dissolved in June 1980, and general elections were held. Riviere did not regain his seat, and he went into retirement from politics. He then resumed his profession as an accountant & private investigator.
