Ms. Luana Laurent said teaching children on Financial Literacy should start by using the various social media platforms that children occupy. She was a guest on the “Roots Connection” program on Q95, speaking on the topic, “Securing Financial Future at any age”. Laurent said a number of children are currently being educated on savings via the most popular social media platform which is TikTok. She urged everyone to find teaching styles that match children’s learning style and even those with learning Disabilities. She added that the internet has a lot of information available on financial education that is there to be grasped. Laurent added that people often ask when they should start teaching their children about money, and she always responds by saying “it’s not about when, but about how”. Belfield said having the Proper discipline when it comes to saving is another reason that will encourage saving. Entrepreneur & social Activist, Paula Celestine, highlights an issue she says needs to be addressed by the current DLP administration. As many accomplished Dominican youth, who completed Tertiary education, are not able to get employment in Dominica, due to the lack of variety in jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers. According to Celestine, this reality indicates that the private sector is struggling, and she calls on the Government to create a more conducive environment to ensure the improvement and diversification of the private sector and increased employment for youth. The Dominica State College (DSC) claims it has partnered with Ferrol’s Architectural Designs to bring to fruition a unique concept design combining the enthusiasm, imagination, skill and expertise of selected students of the students of D.S.C. to construct the New National Library.
Government is said to have agreed that the design, once completed, may be used to rebuild the Dominica National Library on Victoria St, Roseau which was damaged in 2017 by Hurricane Maria. The timeframe for this project is from March 28,2022 to May 4, 2022, and will be completed by both past and present architecture and civil engineering students of the DSC including Patricia Pierre-Louis, Johanan Lewis, Tarsha Tyson, Sardius Olive, Rhaiyel John Lewis, Leighton Loramol, Kuryon Laville, Kazim Blaize, and the initiator of this project, founder/owner of Ferrol’s Architectural Designs, Jedidiah Ferrol. Daryl Hurtault, architect and lecturer at DSC will also be participating and supervising the collective effort of the many innovative minds working on this project. Speaking on Q95’s “Roots Connection On Q” Program hosted on Q95 on Wednesday night by Dr Simone Mathieu, David Bardouille said some of the main reasons why people procrastinate when it comes to securing their financial future, is the feeling of embarrassment and pride. He stressed that Since Financial Literacy is not included in the school’s curriculum; many individuals do not have a starting point. He added that, individuals should save as little as possible and eventually, “little becomes more”. Dr. Irving Andre contends that the bail conditions imposed on Dr Thomson Fontaine on April 25, 2022 by the Magistrate who presided over the incitement case filed against him, are punitive and out of sync with the evidence in that situation, and should be varied immediately. Social Activist Loftus Durand says he is disappointed with the prolonged silence of recently appointed Chairman of the Dominica Electoral Commission, Mr Duncan Stowe, and for his silence on the failure of the commission to implement Electoral and Campaign Finance Reforms. Durand also commends Former Chairman of the Dominica Electoral Commission, Gerald Burton, for attempting to conduct a voter verification exercise - which would have seen the complete cleansing of the names of unqualified persons from the voters list. A call has been made for foster homes/parents for abused children on the island. Nichole Toussaint Jno Baptiste of the Welfare Division has asked for those able to provide a stable home for a child, to come into the division to fill out an application.
