Deputy Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Senator Francisca Joseph said that the UWP has made a call to put in place a Family Division of the court, which will allow due process to be expedited in matters pertaining to Child Care and Child Protection. This was part of her presentation at the 2022-2023 Budget presentation at the House of Assembly Wednesday Afternoon. Senator Joseph added that the Laws are relatively adequate, but implementation and enforcement has always been an issue in Dominica and questioned ‘if there is a political will to do so. She went on to say that we should stop saying that all is well and that we are doing our best when our best is not good enough. Bernard Wiltshire, former attorney general, says we should keep in mind that following the most recent election, observers called for reform. Highlighting that the elections were conducted using a biased method, but despite their warnings, the same technique was used to conduct two elections. More elections will be held, according to Mr. Wiltshire, until the electorate is prepared to challenge Mr. Skerrit. Election reform should be implemented if the public wants it, else it is obvious that we do not live in a democratic society. He argues that the opposition and the Dominican people should be more determined, unite, and stand by the idea that there shouldn't be any more elections in Dominica until the electoral system has been corrected. Dominica Health and Wellness Association Member, Natalie “Sister Nats” Charles, touts a study that shows there is a component of food that conventional nutrition has not considered. She pointed out that a new class of nutrients called fight-o nutrients was identified to be present in food during a study. She says that in contrast to the typical vitamins that nourish, these nutrients serve the role of repairing the body. She emphasized that when a patient is diagnosed with cancer, doctors often ask them to adopt very rigid dietary changes. Most of the time, this means increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat, because the majority of the foods we consume, like white flour, are primary causes of disease, since an acidic body serve as an ideal habitat for a disease. She says disease as a whole is opportunistic, and our health education system needs to address this. She added that being alkaline has emerged as a key weapon in the fight against any disease, and that being acidic makes you vulnerable to all ailments. After 22 years in office, Trade Minister Ian Douglas says measures are being implemented to make Dominica more competitive on the market by going into St Martin, Antigua and other export markets on a regular basis. This he says will help Dominica determine what is required in the market to effectively compete. He added that Dominica is also exploring the possibility of investing in regional depots. Former General Secretary of the Dominica Civil Service Association, Alvin Thomas, contends that there is no question that the CCJ has tasked Dominicans with handling this specific bloated voters list issue. Highlighting that the issue was questioned by the CCJ, which means that it requires some form of investigation. He added that we must now create a strategic plan to involve all Dominicans in the issue of electoral reform as a whole. He continued, saying that it is now up to us to go to work and take the appropriate action, starting with making sure that the list complies with the requirements of the law.
