The DLP Government is appealing to Dominicans to defend the country’s relationship with China. This appeal is being made by the country's leader PM Roosevelt Skerrit. On Monday, Mr Skerrit addressed the official commissioning of the $6million newly constructed China funded Newtown Primary School. Skerrit says the PRC is an ally to Dominica's development. This appeal from the country's Culture Minister Justina Charles. Charles is also encouraging Dominicans to promote and wear the country's national wear as well as to consume the local cuisine. The minister made these remarks during the official launch of the 2016 Independence season over the weekend. Dominica is this year celebrating its 38th anniversary of independence. And MP for the St Joseph Constituency Kelver Darroux also made his own call for persons to partake in the Independence activities. Education Ministry orders schools closed today due to an approaching inclement weather system9/28/2016 Students get the day off today Wednesday September 28, 2016, as the Ministry of Education has advised of the closure of all schools, due to an approaching weather system.
Yesterday’s announcement stated that “All students are hereby advised to remain at home,” as the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development continues to monitor the weather system. This announcement comes on the heels of a weather advisory, warning of the possible formation of a tropical depression or a tropical storm system, which is quickly approaching the Lesser Antilles. The general public is strongly advised to monitor the progress of this system, as a tropical storm watch or warning may be issued for Dominica at any time, once the system has been upgraded. Local Hotelier not in agreement with Kempinski Hotel Project located in the Cabrits National Park9/28/2016 Hotelier Atherton Martin is not in agreement with the location selected for the Kempinski Hotel Project in the Cabrits national park. Martin called on Dominicans to protect Dominica’s natural resources. He argues, if these resources are not preserved, they will cease to exist, creating greater problems for the Dominican economy. DPSU General Secretary laments no advocacy for public servants to be nominated for General Elections9/28/2016 DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang says he is disturbed by the fact that there is no advocacy for public sector employees to be nominated for General Elections, and adds that even if that person loses the election, he or she should be allowed the opportunity to be employed back into public service. Letang is calling on the relevant authorities to make this law, as such an act would ensure that public officers who contest for elections and loses are given a fair chance for employment in the public sector. The September criminal session got underway yesterday at the High Court in Roseau with 42 matters on the Court's cause list.
Among the matters to be heard are seven murder cases to include that of Shane Degallerie, Sherman Webb, Vivian Charles, Mitchel Toussaint and Loweate Montelle Dederick Dick who was charged with the 2015 Jouvert murder of Ken Mitchell of Gallion. Former Director of Public Prosecutions in St. Lucia, Victoria Charles Clarke is presiding over this session. Court Reporter, Carlisle Jno Baptiste, says the new judge is hoping to introduce new measures ensuring proper case management. LIAT has advised that due to the impending passage of an area of disturbed weather it could be forced to cancel certain flights from late evening on today to Thursday 29th September, 2016.
Passengers are advised to continue monitoring official meteorological offices, disaster preparedness organisations, radio stations and www.liat.com for further updates. Passengers travelling during these dates may also contact the LIAT Call Centre for information on the status of their flights. The airline further advises customers affected by the disruptions who wish to rebook for a later date that they will be allowed to do so without change fees or fare differences for a period of two weeks from the date of their original scheduled travel. Following the two-week grace period, passengers will be required to pay applicable fare and change fees when re-booking. LIAT also informed that passengers who decide to travel but are unable to complete their journey due to disruption caused by weather conditions, will not be provided with meals, transportation, hotel accommodation etc. And passengers with onward connections are advised to contact the respective carriers. This week is being observed as Pesticide Awareness Week under the theme 'Manage pesticides responsibility adapt to climate change'. Pesticide Awareness week is observed every year from September 27-30. And Pesticide Inspector, Joseph Blandford, says given that pesticides form a major part of the agricultural production system there is always the need to manage the use of those pesticides responsibly. While some may question why the need to use pesticides, Blandford says given the challenges associated with agricultural production, the use of pesticides is inevitable.
Trade Minister, Ian Douglas appeals to farmers to utilize certified pack houses in order to ensure the quality of produce leaving the island.
The Minister says in accordance with the fresh produce act no produce should be exported without going through a certified pack house. In recent times multipurpose pack houses we erected and commissioned for use in addition to those already in use on island. Douglas called on farmers to work with agricultural authorities to ensure that their produce meets regional and international standards on the market. Graduates of the 2016 Adult Education Program were encouraged to take advantage of new employment opportunities to be materialized for Dominicans. Last week, 300 people graduated from the Adult Education Program of the Ministry of Social Services, Family & Gender Affairs. Ag Minister for Social Services, Family & Gender Affairs, Roslyn Paul, told the graduates although the employment situation in Dominica is challenging, they should take advantage of the entrepreneurship opportunities available, as well as position themselves for new employment opportunities. The participants graduated from programs such as Parenting, Leadership Training, Caribbean Secondary Education Certificates and Entrepreneurial Skill courses.
