Housing Minister Reginald Austrie says to date construction approval have been given for some 210 new homes under the World Bank Housing Recovery Program. He added that planning approval for the designs are being submitted by the Design Firm hired to complete this process, and beneficiaries will participate in the selection of their contractors to engage in work on their behalf. President of the Dominica public Service Union, Steve Joseph is calling for more stringent measures as it pertains to road safety in Dominica. He says the present situation as it relates to bikers in the country would appear that certain rules of the road don’t apply to them, and this in itself is an area of concern. Dominican Boatmen speaking from the Portsmouth Jetty, contend that Boatmen of Dominica feel like prisoners on their own Docks. The Gentlemen who displayed their Government Identifications, described their experiences working on the Boats. Presently the Government of Dominica has implemented a waiver of duties on certain supplies and stuffed barrels entering the country from late December 2020, to the end of the first week of January 2021. Meantime speaking on the protocols in place, fellow boatmen and elder in the community say the boatmen are being treated unfairly, and in most cases, they are treated better on foreign shores when compared to the way they are treated in their own homeland. 2020 has been a year of challenges and opportunities says Executive Director of the National Development Foundation of Dominica, Claytus Joseph. He says challenges are nothing new to the company, such as hurricanes and the storms, but Covid-19 took things to another level. Mr. Joseph says there have been some adaptations to Covid-19 which forced persons to be creative. He contends that the company encourages people to be creative and entrepreneurial. In light of recent vehicular road accidents, Pastor Randy Rodney contends that too many bikers ride without proper protective gear which contributes to extensive damage from incidents on the road. Rodney cautions all motorcyclist to wear protective gear to help reduce the loss of lives from vehicular accidents. Rodney does not believes implementing sleep police or speed bumps is not enough to curb vehicular accidents. He suggests information be provided to Dominican drivers on how to drive. Staff member of the division of Kalinago Upliftment and potential Coordinator of the Kalinago Territory Wi-fi network mesh, Samoza John, says the technical team is currently awaiting imported equipment and technical support from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC).
In an exclusive interview with Q95 FM, John said first phase of the Wi-Fi mesh project will be to install polls at homes and in isolated areas. The Wi-Fi system is expected to provide reliable internet service to the entire Salybia Constituency and will be of no cost to the community for the first year of its operation. John also reveals that some units will be solar powered and others will be powered by homes. According to him, the main broadcast location will be the St Cyr resource centre and he estimates it will take up to two months of work to have the network fully operational. The area’s internet service was severely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and to date, many homes are still without reliable access to the broadband internet. |
