33-year-old Dione Green will return home walking after being a double amputee for over sixteen (16) years. In a statement to the media on Tuesday 30th May 2017, Marcella Cools of Sunset Bay Club said, Green spent close to three (3) months in France, and will return to Dominica next week with new prosthetic legs, which have enabled him to walk again.
The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) ‘Keep Walking Association’, and Marcella Cools of Sunset Bay Club, partnered to launch a Special Prosthesis Project in August 2016, to raise 15,000 Euros to assist Green. During those twelve (12) months, fundraising events including auctions, concerts, and other types of activities were held, in order to raise eighteen thousand Euros which was needed for making this a reality. Green departed Dominica for France on Saturday 11th March 2017, where he underwent rehabilitation therapy. Green is said to have been accompanied by Marc Helie, Co-founder of ‘Keep Walking Association’, and his wife Catherine, who housed him during his stay in France, and also transported him to and from his sessions, to keep the cost down. In the statement, Cools wrote, “Dione has been physically and psychologically very strong, as everyone will get a chance to witness very soon. We would like to thank all who contributed in any way”. Green will reportedly be arriving in Martinique on 7th June 2017. He will travel to Dominica on Thursday 8th June, and will arrive at 12:30pm via ‘Ferry’. The statement said “all will get the chance to welcome him back, as he will be “walking” into his country, Dominica. Dione will be proudly standing, sharing his joy, and thanking all of you again, for “a dream come true”. They are also hoping that someone will give him a job to help him start his new life.

UWP Leader Lennox Linton is expressing disappointment in the Electoral Commission, for what he says is the biased approval of the DLP Government’s proposals, and intentionally overlooking allegations of bribery and treating in Dominica’s Elections. Linton believes the Electoral Commission has been compromised, and now functions almost as an extension of the Government, rather than as an independent body seeking to maintain democracy. Meanwhile UWP Leader Lennox Linton is calling on the Electoral Commission, to help ensure that Government does not take control of the media outlets in Dominica.
According to Linton, the United Workers Party believes that the DLP Government has ordered certain media agencies in Dominica to disassociate their business from the UWP and the DFP. However, Dominica’s constitution allows for all political parties to have fair air-time on all media outlets, to discuss their policies and views for purposes of governing Dominica. Two Colombian nationals charged with ‘possession of a card-making device’ and who had earlier pleaded ‘guilty’, have now changed their plea to ‘Not Guilty’, after they were charged with money laundering, and are on remand at the Dominica State Prison.
Andres Giovanny Giraldo Salamanca from Colombia, and Angie Marcela Garcia Garzon, also from Colombia, were arrested and charged for the offence, which the State alleges took place between April 29, 2017 and May 4, 2017. However, since their guilty plea, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has slapped them with four charges of money laundering, and they then changed their previous guilty plea to not guilty. The FIU is alleging, that the two engaged in money laundering, by having US$6,034.00 (equivalent to EC$16,110.78) in their possession from proceeds of crime, or believing the same to be the proceeds of crime. They are also alleging that the two engaged in money laundering by having in their possession EC$10,440.00, and that was from the proceeds of crime, or believing same to be the proceeds of crime. The other charge is that the two did engage in money laundering by having in their possession EC$7,000.00 and that it was from the proceeds of crime or believing the same to be the proceeds of crime. The matter has been adjourned to 14th August 2017. They are represented by Attorney Wayne Norde. A Murder Charge which was laid last week against Ron Garth Jolly, in the death of Kent Albert Lewis of Pointe Michel, was changed to Manslaughter on May 29, 2017, by prosecutors. Lewis died of a gunshot wound to the neck, at a bar in Pointe Michel on Saturday, May 19, 2017.
The manslaughter charge was read to him, but he was not required to enter a plea. The prosecution did not object to bail, which was set at EC$50,000.00, however, Jolly will need to get a property surety to guarantee his release. Retired Police Superintendent Yvonne Alexander ready to work as Dominica Cancer Society President5/30/2017 Photo: DA Vibes Distinguished Retired Police Superintendent Yvonne Alexander, who was recently elected President of the Dominica Cancer Society, is ready to roll up her sleeves, and take on the task of heading that association. She joined the Cancer Society about one year ago, and acknowledges that being new will be challenging, but she is ready to take on the challenge.
The Cancer Society elected a new Board of Directors at its AGM on 2nd May 2017. Alexander says being the president is a responsibility that requires dedication to the association and to all of its activities. She describes her function as a big new responsibility, as the association has many needs and limited resources. She added that very few people are willing to take on these types of responsibilities. However, Alexander says with some past board members on this current board, she is looking forward to working with the new executive. The other board members are Vice President Kathleen Cornelius, Secretary Juliet Lewis, Treasurer Anne Marie George, PRO Vinna Royer, and Board Members Jennifer Carlyle and Nadia Riviere. Meanwhile Alexander is extending an invitation to the general public to support the association’s planned or related activities throughout the year, such as the ‘Annual Walk for Cancer Care’ in October, and fund raising activities organized by other groups, including a ‘Pan in Harmony’ concert at the Arawak House of Culture on 17th June, and a gospel concert at the Arawak House of Culture in August. Tourism Minister says Government plans to place two litter wardens to stop garbage dumping in Roseau5/30/2017 Tourism Minister Senator Robert Tonge says during the next fiscal year, Government will continue its mission to keep the city of Roseau clean. He said two litter wardens will be placed in the city, to ensure that indiscriminate dumping of garbage comes to an end. The Minister is urging business owners to come on board in assisting with keeping the city clean. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Careen Prevost PPOD writes open letter asking United Workers Party Execs to examine themselves and their strategies5/30/2017 In an open letter addressed to the United Workers Party, The Peoples Party Of Dominica (PPOD), wants the opposition to re-examine itself and its strategies.
The PPOD is asking, is there really a viable alternative for the leadership of the country? The PPOD claims that there seems to be a growing question asked by many Dominicans; “If not Skerrit, then who?”. PPOD says this question has become even more of a concern since the last parliamentary sitting, and recent interview conducted with the Leader of the Opposition. PPOD says never before has the Opposition as a whole proven itself to be this unprepared to lead a country, to be an alternative, and to be a government in waiting. The letter goes on to say, For us at PPOD, it was obvious at the parliamentary sitting that the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP), after two and a half years, have still not mastered or understood the parliamentary rules and procedures. The constant misuse of the “points of order and clarification,” and lack of knowledge and understanding of the procedures when in use, makes clear that any of the concerns held by the public, would not be adequately and effectively presented before the House of Parliament. To the Opposition United Workers Party, PPOD leaves this message; it matters not how strong your beliefs, how genuine your message, if it cannot be properly communicated in a manner suitable for its audience, your message is lost, even before it is uttered. It is important to act like the Government you seek to become, for it is the Government the people will expect you to be. Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party Michael Astaphan says the DLP Government’s recent attempt to pass a proposed Bill, which in some ways sought to legalize treating and bribery in general elections, was a “Big Joke”.
Astaphan sees this attempt as disrespectful and mischievous. He says Government must refrain from implementing laws which can create an atmosphere of dictatorship, in a democratic country. Dominica Freedom Party General Secretary Johnson Boston is calling on Police Chief Daniel Carbon, to re-educate himself on the provisions of the constitution which governs the Dominica’s affairs.
Boston’s comment is in response to Carbon’s recent statement, where he reportedly advised citizens not to protest near the Parliament building. However, Boston says the Police Chief has no right to warn or demand that persons refrain from protesting anywhere, as it is their right to protest if they feel aggrieved by any Government decisions. |
